The Norwalk Hospital 125th Anniversary Gala was held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. The evening was filled with celebration, appreciation and charity. Meadow Ridge and Ridge Crest were proud to have been the Presenting Sponsors for the event.
The story of Norwalk Hospital actually began in 1888 when local hat trimmer Margaret Cavanagh was horrified to find a man dying in the street because there were no medical facilities nearby. She enlisted bystanders to carry him to a makeshift dispensary. She then approached her foreman and together they rallied citywide support to construct a community hospital. Thanks to the steadfast support of neighbors who understood what an outstanding hospital means to the well-being of a community, Norwalk Hospital became a reality in 1893.
In the first year, 31 patients were cared for. Today, that number exceeds 315,000 per year.
Over its 125-year history, Norwalk Hospital has been at the forefront of providing quality, compassionate care to the residents of Fairfield County. While much has changed over the years, the hospital has maintained an unwavering commitment to provide exceptional patient care to every person in the community.
The proceeds from the Gala’s auction totaled nearly $500,000 and will help create a Caring for the Caregiver program at Norwalk Hospital. The program will provide comprehensive support services for caregivers both inside and outside of the hospital. Managed by a full-time social worker, Caring for the Caregiver will be a collaborative resource of information, education, respite, and support for people caring for their loved ones and for our clinicians caring for patients.
Caregiving can be extremely stressful and lead to physical and emotional burnout. By introducing a formalized Caring for the Caregiver program, the hospital hopes to extend the reach of support to where the caregivers are – by the bedside – which in turn will create a ripple effect of support and caring to staff, patients and the community.
In addition to Meadow Ridge and Ridge Crest acting as Presenting Sponsors of the event, Meadow Ridge Executive Director Michelle Bettigole and Meadow Ridge resident Lea Mintz served on the Gala Committee. Lea has been a longtime supporter of the hospital; together, the two raised over $10,000 in donated silent auction prizes for the gala. The community also sponsored the hospital’s 2016 Gala.
