U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 15,000 nursing homes across the country to create their Nursing Home Finder and come up with the list of homes designated as the best. To receive a high rating, a home had to provide significantly more than the required minimum of rehabilitation therapy. Their ratings were compiled using data from Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Nursing homes were rated “poor” to “top-performing” on a scale of 1 to 5.

Evaluating Skilled Nursing Home Options in Fairfield County
With roughly 1 in 10 people age 85 and above residing in a U.S. nursing home, the ability to properly evaluate a nursing home is increasingly crucial. If you or a loved one is searching for a nursing home in Fairfield County, here are some other important things to consider when evaluating your options.

You’ll likely start your search online.
While the ratings provided by U.S. News & World Report and Nursing Home Compare provide a useful launching point, experts recommend you read inspection reports and dig into the details behind the ratings. Another useful resource is Nursing Home Inspect. This online tool that allows you to compare nursing homes based on any deficiencies cited by regulators and penalties imposed in the past three years.

Talk to friends and relatives who’ve had recent experiences with local facilities.
Then you’ll need to visit nursing homes to best gauge fit. Walk around, talk to residents and staff, and ask tons of questions. “What’s the staff-to-resident ratio?” “What the readmission rate for rehabilitation service?” “Do you have open visiting hours?” And of course, “What will it cost?” AARP has created a handy checklist of questions to ask.

Pay attention to the staff and their interactions with residents.
Observe whether staffers greet residents and visitors with a smile. Having a genuine focus on each person as an individual is meaningful. Treating residents just like anyone else, and not their particular illness or inabilities, helps each resident feel like they’re safe and valued.
